Job Description
4.0. JOB DESCRIPTIONS
4.1.1. Responsible for seeing that all patients receive a systematic initial and ongoing assessment of their physical and psycho-social status, specific to their age.
4.1.2. Collaborates with other health team members to assess patient/family education and discharge planning needs.
4.1.3. Assist the head nurses in overseeing the patient’s plan of care ensuring that it is being updated by the nurses appropriately.
4.1.4. Demonstrates leadership and priority setting skills in the coordination of administrative and patient care responsibilities for assigned shift.
4.1.5. Recognizes and anticipates problems and needs of Operating Room Nursing unit including nursing staff and patients for appropriate intervention.
4.1.6. Provides direction to the staff and assists them in the execution of their responsibilities.
4.1.7. Ensures patient related information is updated in the computer.
4.1.8. Responds to patient/family concerns and consults other involved services as appropriate.
4.1.9. Coordinates admissions to the Unit and transfers from the Unit to all involved service providers.
4.1.10. Contacts the Physicians to give important information relating to patient under care or clarifying orders.
4.1.11. Endorses to the next shift complete and pertinent reports to facilitate continuity of care.
4.1.12. Assists the head nurse in evaluating the quality of nursing care being given by the staff and its documentation providing guidance when needed.
4.1.13. Evaluates the condition and progress of each patient and appropriateness of care plans.
4.1.14. Assists the head nurse to facilitate required reports to the Nursing Director regarding administrative activities.
4.1.15. Maintains a productive working relationship with superiors keeping them informed as to condition of patients and pertinent information regarding the operations of the Unit.
4.1.16. Acts as role model for other staff members ensuring that all staffs maintain professional services and appropriate behavior while on duty.
4.1.17. Participates in the establishment and revision of Operating Room Nursing Unit or Nursing Department norms as designated.
4.1.18. Acts as resource to staff members during assessment of complex patient/family needs.
4.1.19. Reports to Maintenance department any malfunction of equipment and machine and makes follow-up until it is delivered to Operating Room Nursing Unit.
4.1.20. Assists other staff members in improving their assessment skills, giving input when the need is identified.
4.1.21. Performs head nurse’s functions whenever he/she is out of Operating Room Nursing Unit for whatever reason.
4.2. Performs as Staff Nurse to assigned patient preferably when the head nurse is present in the unit. Refer to OR Staff Nurse for detailed job descriptions.
4.2.1. Comprehensive assessment upon receipt of patient in Operating Room Nursing Unit including: preview of patient’s history and main complain; drug allergies; physical and psychological condition; and pain assessment.
4.2.2. Performs nursing interventions to include: inputs from the Surgeons and other healthcare disciplines involved in the care of the patient; reviews and updates the Surgeon for any significant change in the patient’s condition or when a new treatment is added or discontinued.
4.2.3. Administers medication following the seven (7) R’s of medication.
4.2.4. Follows infection control guidelines such as: proper hand-washing before and after the procedure; standard precautions; proper and safe cleaning of blood, body fluids, and chemical spills; and reporting potential infections to appropriate authority i.e. Infection Control Nurse.
4.2.5. Receives endorsement and file from the ward nurse for patient undergoing operation
4.2.6. Assessment of patient for risk and application of appropriate precaution against accidental fall.
4.2.7. Skin care, prevention and care of pressure ulcers.
4.2.8. Constantly and continuously monitors patient for level of consciousness, vitals signs, and skin color at bedside during operation documenting the same in appropriate nursing form where applicable
5.0. JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
5.1. Education: Graduate of BS in Nursing.
5.2. Experience: 10 years current experience in Operating Room or related specialty plus 3 years as charge nurse or acting capacity.
5.3. Knowledge/Skills: Broad knowledge of theories and practices in general nursing and specializing in Operating Room. Sound knowledge of company policies, procedures and appropriate practices.
5.4. Equipment operated: basic equipment for nursing care and equipment specific to Operating Room Nursing Unit
5.5. License: A registered nurse (RN), BCLS/ACLS certified
5.6. Language: Fluent in spoken and written English. Spoken Arabic is desirable.
